May 15, Denver Water will join elected officials from Summit and Grand counties and representatives of the Clinton Ditch & Reservoir Co. in signing a historic agreement that marks a new era for Colorado water. The Colorado River Cooperative Agreement (CRCA) is the product of more than five years of negotiations, and ultimately involved more than 40 parties from the Front Range to Colorado’s western border. The agreement is significant for several reasons:
• New, collaborative approach — We are settling historic conflicts that have dominated water in Colorado for too long, and committing to a new path forward based on cooperation and collaboration.
• Improved environmental health — We are committing significant resources to improving the health of the Colorado River and its tributaries.
• More secure water future — The agreement provides more water for the West Slope and Denver Metro region, and a more secure water supply for millions of Coloradans.
• Moffat Project — The CRCA allows the Moffat Collection System Project (Gross Reservoir enlargement) to move forward. This project is critical to addressing the Denver Metro area’s water shortage and improving the reliability of the system.
