Derek Miller ran several investment funds for the Small Enterprise Assistance Funds in Russia, helping local entrepreneurs grow their companies and prepare them for sale (1997-2001). The fund's purpose was to provide a model of investment in small businesses in an ex-communist country with no such experience. In 2002 Derek and his wife opened Broadway Pizza in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. They grew the chain to 13 locations in 5 cities. In 2009 they began to wind the business down in preparation for moving back to the US with their children. Currently Derek and his wife still own 2 pizzerias, a Mexican restaurant, and an ice cream shop, which operate independently of their owners, to the great satisfaction of all. Derek joined The Growth Coach franchise in June, 2011.
